Bed strategy analytics

Edge Health provided bed strategy analytical support to a Foundation Trust hospital as it embarked on a major reconfiguration. Changes were being driven by commissioner’s plans to reduce community bed capacity and the need to deliver a c.£2m CIP.
We regularly met with clinical and operational staff from across the hospital to understand the challenges they faced as well as the opportunities for reducing length of stay and therefore bed occupancy. Using their insight and the trust’s data, we then modelled bed occupancy using hourly patient-level data, which we used to simulate the effect of different clinical initiatives (which had been identified with clinical and operational staff).
Our work helped to develop a robust baseline model of the ‘as is’ position at the trust. We then helped to validate the ‘should be’ beliefs held by the clinical and non-clinical staff at the hospital.
BedPlanner is the analytical engine which sits behind our bed simulation work. It has been developed based on feedback from clinicians and health service managers and it focuses on delivering the information that they need to develop confidence ahead of critical decisions, such as a bed reconfigurations.
