Sad and distressing news this evening that the PM Boris Johnson has been admitted to St Thomas’ ICU with Covid-19. It puts a weekend of avoiding the sunny weather into some context.

It was two weeks ago that Boris Johnson announced the lockdown in the UK. Based on data from Italy and Spain (see below), this should start to be visible in the UK in the next few days (new daily cases declining) and weeks (hospital beds occupied by patients with covid-19 falling).

Sweden, who has until now not proposed instituting a lockdown is now reported to be considering one in imminently as its death toll surpasses that of all other Scandinavian countries.

Once this virus is brought under control to save lives, there is an urgent need to start planning how to remove the lockdown to save livelihoods safely.
