Acute bed reconfiguration

This project was completed for a large acute NHS Trust. The Trust’s bed base was not being used effectively and it needed to reconfigure the number and location of beds to improve efficiency.

Edge Health’s team undertook analysis of patient level data to gain a comprehensive understanding of the use of all beds across the trust, including information on clinical co-dependencies. We developed a simulation tool to analyse different configuration scenarios and used live modelling with individual clinical and operational teams to strengthen understanding and gain ownership of the process.

Based on our analytics, beds were reconfigured within 10 week. The hospital now has one of the top five performing A&E departments in the country.

Bed Planner is the analytical engine which sits behind our bed simulation work. It has been developed based on feedback from clinicians and health service managers and it focuses on delivering the information that they need to develop confidence ahead of critical decisions, such as a bed reconfigurations.
